There are a huge number of options when it comes to chemical cleaners at the supermarket and it's hard to know what one yields the best results. However, a comparative study by CHOICE actually found that homemade alternatives are just as, if not more, effective than store bought cleaners. Having an effective kitchen cleaner will ensure your appliances and surfaces last longer. But, its not just their effectiveness that makes homemade cleaners a better alternative, they also have multiple other benefits;
Easy to make
They require very few ingredients, making it quick and easy to prepare. For a non-toxic all-purpose cleaner you could use:
-one part white vinegar
-one part water
-a few drops of essential oil (e.g. tea tree oil)
Warning: do not use acidic cleaners on granite or marble as it can corrode the stone, but you can use it for your stove, cupboards and fridge.
The base ingredients are so cheap and some of which you may already have in your home. Invest in an essential oil to add to your mixture, as they provide fragrance and have antiseptic properties. Although they are more expensive, only a small amount would be needed each time meaning it will not need to be replaced as often.
Using a reusable plastic spray bottle for your homemade cleaner will result in less wastage, as you cut out the use of disposable plastic spray bottles. Furthermore, the toxic chemicals from supermarket bought kitchen cleaners will not be going down the drain and polluting the environment.
Using natural homemade cleaning products is also a safer option. They are safe to use around children and pets without the risk of them harming themselves if they happen to get a hold of it. Additionally it keeps the air clean in your home, as it doesn’t release harmful fumes, and it doesn’t pollute the home further with harsh chemicals going into the drains and waterways.
